Problem Statement
Elderly individuals coping with multiple chronic diseases, such as heart conditions, high blood pressure, and diabetes, often struggle with managing their intricate medication regimens due to memory loss and cognitive challenges. This results in missed doses, incorrect dosages, and potential health risks. A solution is needed to help these seniors adhere to their medication schedules and reduce errors, ultimately enhancing their well-being.
Opportunity Statement:
An opportunity exists to develop an intuitive and effective medication management system specifically catering to the needs of elderly individuals who contend with memory impairments and concurrent chronic diseases. By creating a solution that simplifies medication routines, offers personalized reminders, and ensures accurate dosages, we can empower seniors to independently manage their medications, improving their quality of life and health outcomes.
Project Background
In an aging society, the challenges of managing multiple chronic conditions and memory impairments are becoming increasingly common. Statistics reveal that approximately 40% of older adults experience some degree of memory impairment, which significantly contributes to the problem of missed doses and medication errors. Noncompliance with medication regimens is estimated to result in over 125,000 deaths annually and costs the U.S. healthcare system more than $100 billion yearly.
Existing solutions often fall short in providing user-friendly and personalized support for this demographic. Hence, there's an urgent need to develop an innovative solution to simplify medication management for middle-aged and elderly individuals with memory impairments and improve their well-being while receiving care at home.
